Grace O'Malley, born in the early 1500's, is remembered through legend and Irish lore as a powerful sea captain and pirate. Daughter of an Irish chieftain, she is married off as a young teen to ally her clan with another. Her husband is a brute. She finally finds freedom at sea. When the English invade Ireland, Grace ultimately loses husbands and children and friends, but gains power with a fleet of warriors and ships. She faces Queen Elizabeth I to stand up for her own rights.
Inspired by a Trinity Knot with its three distinct areas, Lawhon has arranged her novel on the three main parts of Grace O'Malley's life: Maiden, Mother, and Matriarch. (This makes reading a bit choppy, but the whole book could be read part by part in that order, too.)
While it is said that history is written by the survivors, Lawhon found the only official written record of Grace O'Malley's life was in the ENGLISH State Papers (not Ireland's) with a very unflattering description. (p. 490) Lawhon has mined legends and stories in her research to provide a portrait of O'Malley that will stand in readers' minds as definitive. "Ego te expectabo" or "I will wait for you" says her second husband in the book. Indeed, Ariel Lawhon, we readers wait for your next novel with great anticipation.
